Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule a PRT? Where will it be held?
Once you have received all clearances and passed the Suitability Review Panel, you will be contacted by Diplomatic Security Human Resources to schedule your PRT. The PRT is offered at DSS offices throughout the United States and around the world.
How many times can I take the PRT?
If an applicant does not pass the PRT on the first attempt, they will be given one additional opportunity to pass, after a 60-day waiting period. If the applicant does not pass the PRT on the second attempt, their candidacy will be terminated.
What do I do if I am injured and can’t take the test?
When you are contacted to schedule your PRT, you must notify the scheduler if you are unable to take the PRT due to a medical reason. Diplomatic Security Human Resources will provide guidance on next steps.
What is the difference between the DSS PRT and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) Do I have to pass the FLETC PEB also?
The DSS PRT is administered by DSS during the application process, during the Basic Special Agent Course, and tri-annually throughout a special agent’s career. The FLETC PEB is administered by FLETC during the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) which is part of the Basic Special Agent Course. You can learn more about the FLETC PEB here: https://www.fletc.gov/peb-scores
Does your score on the PRT effect your final score on the register?
You must achieve a satisfactory score or higher in each of the three events to pass the PRT and be added to the Special Agent Register of Cleared Candidates. A higher score on the PRT will not give you any advantage in the application process. We encourage all applicants to try their best on the PRT.
Will the 1.5 mile run be on a treadmill or track?
The 1.5 mile run will be held either on a track, trail, or treadmill, depending on testing location and local conditions. Once you know your PRT testing location, you can ask the test proctor how the 1.5 mile run will be performed.
What can I do to improve my PRT scores?
A sample training plan is included in the Physical Readiness Test Preparation and Training section.
How are the pushups/sit ups assessed?
Only push-ups or sit-ups done to standard (as explained in this guide) will be counted. Proctors will monitor participants for correct form and count correctly performed push-ups / sit-ups out loud. Incorrectly performed push-ups / sit-ups shall not be counted.
Do I need to take the PRT if I am applying for the William D. Clarke, Sr. Diplomatic Security (Clarke DS) Fellowship?
If you are selected as a Fellow or an alternate in the Clarke DS Fellowship, you will take the PRT as a baseline. Your PRT test results are not included in the selection process and are not provided to the selection committee. At the end of the fellowship, all Clarke DS Fellows will be required to pass a pre-employment PRT prior to receiving a final offer of employment and onboarding as a DSS Special Agent.
How do I request an accommodation?
The Department of State considers arrangements known as “reasonable accommodations” to candidates with disabilities. Candidates requiring reasonable accommodations should contact OAA@state.gov within one week of receiving their invitation to the PRT. Decisions for granting reasonable accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis.
