Diplomatic Technology Officer
As a Diplomatic Technology Officer (DTO) in the Foreign Service —you will be part of a global team supporting and shaping the future of diplomatic technology. This role is designed for highly adaptable individuals with IT skills who enjoy continuous learning and professional growth. This is a multi-faceted position wherein employees are expected to be knowledgeable about and responsible for a number of different technologies. You will be at the forefront of enhancing, managing, and protecting the technology that enables modern diplomacy.
- DTOs areas of responsibility include: Physical infrastructure, such as cabling and fiber; LAN/WAN circuitry; local and regional radio; and the physical security of sensitive material and infrastructure.
- Customer support and system administration, such as managing customers’ IT business needs; working with and managing the Department’s four network types; creating and maintaining cloud network filing systems; and monitoring and improving the Department’s cybersecurity.
- Various types of management, such as asset management and inventory; project management and team building; employee management and evaluations; management of services; and crisis and emergency management and practices.
- Other assorted topics, including data analytics; incorporating new and emerging technologies; supporting high-level visits, such as those of the President of the United States; budgeting; deploying and maintaining end user equipment; running and regulating the mailroom and Pouch service; maintaining and upholding communications security; overseeing and problem solving for the Diplomatic Telecommunication Service; installing and troubleshooting advanced infrastructure; and maintaining the private branch exchange .
Conditions of Employment
- Be a U.S. citizen and available for service. *
- Be able to obtain a Top-Secret Security Clearance.
- Be able to meet the appropriate Foreign Service Minimum Medical Qualification.
- Be able to obtain a favorable Suitability Review Panel determination.
- Be at least 20 years old to apply; at least 21 years old to be appointed.
- Be appointed prior to age 60 (preference eligible veterans excepted).
Requirements
- Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain national security eligibility.
- High school diploma or GED certificate and 5 years of specialized experience; or
- AA or AS or higher in an IT-related field; or
- AA or AS or higher degree in a non- IT field and 2 years of specialized experience; or
- Served in a United States Military IT Specialty Code, or Civil Service IT Specialty, or as an IT contractor to the USG, and 2 years specialized experience; or
- Minimum 36 months “fully successful” employment in a State Department Information Management Assistant or Expanded Professional Associates Program- Information Management position at the FP-06 level, or any grade above, and met the training requirements equivalent to an EPAP-IM.
