Regional Medical Laboratory Scientist (RMLS)
Foreign Service Regional Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Bureau of Medical Services (MED) provide critical support to our U.S. embassy health units by managing the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of all lab-related operations to ensure the best possible healthcare for our U.S. diplomats and their families abroad. They perform a range of tests and procedures, from routine to highly specialized, in various fields including parasitology, microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, blood banking and urinalysis. While exploring new places and different cultures, Laboratory Scientists encounter daily challenges that require creative solutions.
Regional Medical Laboratory Scientists have access to continued medical training and career development programs, health and medical coverage, and federal retirement benefits. When serving overseas, they receive paid housing or an appropriate housing allowance, and paid K-12 education for dependent children.
