Foreign Service Officer

Foreign Service Officers work in one of five different career tracks: Consular, Economic, Management, Political and Public Diplomacy. After you’ve chosen a career track, the next step is to register for the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT).

Foreign Service Construction Engineer

As a Construction Engineer, you will use your engineering skills and vertical construction experience to manage new projects, supervise upgrades to existing properties and support sustainable design and energy conservation programs.


Foreign Service Facility Manager

Facility Managers administer the upkeep of buildings, grounds, equipment and utilities overseas while supervising one of the largest and most diverse work forces domestically or at our posts overseas.


Foreign Service Consular Fellows Program

Foreign Service Consular Fellows serve in U.S. embassies and consulates overseas alongside Foreign Service Officers, other U.S. agency personnel, and locally-employed staff. Using their language skills in Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, or Arabic, their primary duty is to adjudicate visas for foreign nationals. Duties and responsibilities are similar to those of entry-level career Foreign Service Officers. The first step to becoming a Consular Fellow is to complete the online application by registering for the Consular Fellows Program Test (CFPT).


Foreign Service Information Management Specialist

Information Management Specialists manage and operate worldwide information technology infrastructure, including PC local and wide area networks, telecommunications systems, telephone and UHF/VHF programs, and diplomatic pouch and mail services. The first step to becoming an Information Management Specialist is to complete the online application by registering for the Information Management Specialist Test (IMST).


Foreign Service Security Engineering Officer

Security Engineering Officers provide technical security support and engineering expertise to protect U.S. Foreign Service posts overseas and in domestic locations. Responsibilities include working with all aspects of security systems – from design, development and analysis to installation and testing. Security Engineering Officers conduct security assessments for U.S. overseas missions, conduct technical surveillance countermeasure inspections, implement computer security measures, and support dignitary travel.


Foreign Service Security Technical Specialist

Security Technical Specialists provide support and assist in worldwide technical security programs which provide protection for U.S. Department of State facilities and personnel from technical espionage, acts of terrorism, and crime. Their work is incredibly varied, managing projects and people, supporting dignitary travel, exploring the use of new technology, and installing, maintaining, and repairing a vast array of complex technical security equipment.

PEPFAR Country Coordinator

The PEPFAR Country Coordinator leads the U.S. government PEPFAR interagency team in the designated country in the conception, formulation, and recommendation of initiatives in response to the HIV/AIDs epidemic in designated country. A master’s degree or higher in a relevant professional discipline such as Public Policy, Public Health, Business Administration or other related subjects are required.
