RECOMMENDATIONS TO OBTAIN THE GREATEST VALUE
1. If you are interested in applying to the Foreign Service as a generalist candidate through the FSOT process, you are STRONGLY recommended to take the practice test. This will give you a reliable indication of how well you might perform on the actual FSOT and allow you to study or pursue further education before taking the actual exam. If you are likely to pass the exam, it will give you the confidence and motivation to move forward with your application. Either way, the results should make you more prepared for the exam, which should increase your score and reduce test anxiety somewhat.
2. Take the practice FSOT as though you were an actual candidate, meaning:
- Prepare for the exam like you were taking the real exam (e.g., review the study guide and other information about the FSOT; study the topics to be covered on the exam such as reading textbooks on the relevant topics, etc.).
- Take the entire exam one time.
- Take it at a time when you are alert and prepared.
- Allocate sufficient time to take the entire exam in one sitting (105+ minutes).
- Take it in a location where you will be undisturbed.
- Do not accept any help when taking the exam.
- Give it your full effort.
3. If you do not perform as well as you might like on the initial practice FSOT, then study to improve your scores and take the practice FSOT again in 6 months. Studying might range from reading on the topics covered on the exam to taking courses or pursuing degrees related to the work of the Foreign Service.
Final note: The practice FSOT is provided as a service to candidates to help them prepare and does not imply any certainty of passing the actual FSOT.
