I have been looking through the application process for the Consular Fellows program and it seems unclear as to which countries are available for work. On the Pearson Vue site under Language Designation, it seems several forms of Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish are the only designations.

    Hi, JC,
Yes, for the Consular Fellow Limited Non-Career Appointments, we seek individuals with proficiency in Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese. Assignments are to Embassies in countries with high demand for visas to enter the United States and with visa applicants speaking those languages.
Our Foreign Service career positions require worldwide availability.
    Best regards.

As mentioned, State seeks with language proficiency in Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese. Moreover, (as mentioned) assignments are to Embassies in countries with high demand for visas to enter the United States and with visa applicants speaking those languages. For example, Mexico has one US Embassy and nine US Consulates therefore would it be correct to assume that Mexico might fall within high demand as mentioned. Nevertheless, Spanish is the official language in over 20 countries, Arabic is the official language in over 20 countries, Portuguese is the official language in close to 10 countries, and Mandarin is spoken by almost 1 billion people. Therefore, can you please elaborate a little more on which countries within the language proficiency sphere fall under having high visa applicant demands? Or can you point to some statistical document that can paint a b better picture for the counties with high visa applicant demands as mention. Thank.

You’re not likely to get an official response on this. It’s not the kind of thing HR normally has time to deal with because when people apply for jobs with the department, they’re expected to be worldwide available and therefore shouldn’t really care what may or may not be on any given bid list. Beyond that, even if you said countries A, B and C normally would be on the lists for Language 1, it’s possible you list have countries X, Y and Z.

You could do some internet searching if you truly were interested, but I doubt the green checks would be able to give this information. Good luck.

Does a Consular Fellows Program apply to a specific embassy or does the state allocate them to where they see fit?

Where they see fit. CFs can work up to two tours, which, depending on the language, could be in two different countries.
