If you obtain a position with a US Embassy in another country, can you bring your pet (dog) with you?

If it’s allowed at that particular post, yes.

Some posts flat-out don’t allow pets, but most do. Some restrictions are tighter than others. Right now, I’m at a post with several multi-dog households. A friend with two cats, however, said she’d never bid China, as you can only bring in one pet per passport.

Some places it’s much harder to have a pet than others, which could be due to climate, vet care in the country, locals’ attitude toward pets and whether landlords in the country will allow critters in their units.

Once you’re in, there is a wealth of information available to pet owners, and your GSO would become your frequent consultant. Pet ownership becomes a huge factor in bidding and can be super, super expensive, but many, many people happily serve with pets.

My last CG had a bird and two dogs. He’d had the bird for 20-something years and had it with him in service the whole time. I’ve also known people with hamsters and a rabbit. Those are trickier due to country’s export regulations. But dogs and cats, while I’d never say it was easy to travel with one, is a lot more regulated.

Smaller is usually easier because you can usually carry your pet in the cabin of the plane (some airlines won’t fly with pets in cargo during certain months) but my neighbor has a Doberman. It was NOT easy (and very expensive) to get her here, but she did and the family is so happy to have her with them.

If you do a search here, there was a threads called Dogs Pets that might be helpful

    Well,

Definitely, it should be allowed. You pet is part of you legitimate property, you should be allowed to take it along with you…
