I haven’t seen much chatter in this forum about the GSO position that was recently closed. Can someone advise on the timeline for the GSO position hiring process, etc? Is there an A-school or some sort of orientation, etc… Will they required language training? I understanding the hiring process is a bit different for generalist and specialist. The GSO position recently closed out and to my surprise, I received and email via USAJOBS explaining that I’ve been referred to a hiring manager. For a typical fed job after receiving such a notice, a person more than likely will be interviewed, etc. Is this the case for a GSO position? I’m just trying to get some information sense I haven’t heard much about the GSO position in this forum. If there are some folks out there that held this position, your inputs would be helpful. Any/all insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Now your file goes on to real people to review to ensure you have met the qualifications. From there, you will go to a QEP panel, and after that, you will find out if you will be invited to the OA. There was a fairly recent opening that, IIRC, wound up sending about 10-15 percent of the overall applicants to the QEP. You face the same long odds are FSOs do but you’re in until you’re out. They’ll let you know either way.
From here on out, your USAJobs profile won’t change.
When I applied as a different kind of specialist, it took from six months of the announcement closing to receive an invitation to the OA. Definitely keep living your life.
Good luck. A good GSO is a great thing.

GuestFeb 18, 2020 at 10:31 amPost count: 4876Thank you Former FSS Candidate. You always provide amazing insight on this forum!!! State should send you a check. From what I’ve heard, many posts tend to have FSOs (Pol, Mgt, Econ, etc) in GSO’s slots which might contribute to the overall low hiring rate. Some say the GSO position is a great tool for FSOs to increase their leadership and managerial experience to include gaining added responsibilities, etc… I understand this process is a marathon and not a sprint so I’ll keep living life until my number is/if called. Thanks again for the insight and quick response.

GuestFeb 26, 2020 at 1:46 amPost count: 4876The comparatively low number of GSO specialists isn’t so much political/PD/econ-tracked generalists doing out-of-cone tours; it’s because management generalists also serve as GSOs, HROs and Financial Management Officers in addition to working as management officers. Most people who are now management officers have worked in multiple jobs within the management field. One of my friends just came on as a management generalist and her first job will be as a GSO. My former management officer is now an HRO – they switch between those jobs.
Essentially, there are fer specialists in those three tracks because the positions are interchangeable with the management-coned generalists.

I’m studying up on the oral assessment pdf and 12 dimensions to be ready. If I’m lucky enough to move beyond the assessment, I’m currently medically cleared and already have the required secret clearances. One would figure, having these two items already checked off would somewhat speed up the suitability process. Hopefully, the corona virus issue does not stall the process too much. I’m taking it one day at a time. This process is a marathon not a sprint. Good luck to the rest of you. Take Care.
