The bureau offers two types of positions for those interested in working in the Washington, D.C. area: (1) Civil Service, and (2) Personal Services Contractors. Both employment paths offer opportunities in the following main areas:

Civil Service
All U.S. Department of State employees, contractors, and locally-employed staff contribute to advancing U.S. interests and implementing foreign policy. Personal Services Contractors
Personal Services Contractors (PSCs) are individuals who contract with OBO to establish an employer-employee relationship. The individual is a direct-hire, although OBO’s PSCs are legally not U.S. Government (USG) employees for the purpose of any laws the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) administers.
