One of my references was wondering- what would she have to do if contacted? (Would this vary by contacting bureau, or is there a uniform process?)

Hi, Alex,
If your reference is contacted, she may be asked to answer questions about things such as how you work with others, her opinion on your suitability for the internship, things like that. This is a uniform process.

Separate references are not accepted. On the online application I believe you are asked for references (as part of the online application).
