Are the Oakwood Apartments available for IMS staff during A-100 training? Additionally, what is the current housing allowance for this period?

If you join the Department from outside the DC area, you will be eligible for both lodging and meals and incidentals per diem during your initial training. If your training period is longer than two months, however, the per-diem rate gets gradually reduced:
- To 50% of the DC rate from days 61-120 of your training
- To 25% for days 121 and beyond
You can use the lodging component of this per diem for any number of short-stay apartments in the area, including the different Oakwoods. One nice feature about most of the Oakwood properties is that they offer shuttle service to FSI.
You can find current per diem rates on GSA's website here. The lodging component for the DC area varies between $157 and $211 per day, depending on the time of year. Most major hotels and short-stay apartment chains will honor the current lodging per diem rate as their "Government Rate".

One more followup on housing during initial training.
The Department of State has an agreement with Oakwood properties in the DC area that facilitates direct billing of lodging charges for Department employees on long-term TDY status in the DC area (including initial training at FSI).
Under this program, lodging charges are billed directly to HR/EX--in other words, eligible employees do not have out-of-pocket expenses for lodging. Participating employees will have their travel orders amended to show they will not receive the lodging portion of the per diem allowance; participating employees will receive the Meals and Incidentals (M&IE) portion of the per diem allowance on the usual sliding scale—100% for the 1st 60 days, 50% for the next 60 days, and 25% for any days thereafter.
To see if you are eligible, send an e-mail to [hrpcslodging at state dot gov]. Please include your training dates, the number of family members who will accompany you during your training and your expected travel dates. HRPCS Lodging will work with Oakwood to make your reservations and will request your orders be amended to show your participation. With the continuingly increasing numbers of employees taking advantage of this program it is best to make arrangements as early as possible once your assignments have been made.
The program will only pay for the cost of accommodations for the days authorized by the travel orders. These include utilities, local phone service, basic cable TV, maid service, laundry room usage, shuttle service to and from the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) and the Falls Church Metro station, high - speed internet, use of fitness center and parking. Any additional expenses will be the responsibility of the employee. These include but are not limited to: a one time pet fee charged at move in, long distance phone calls, pay per view television programming, dry cleaning, additional days not covered by the PCS orders, or any damage to the property. Please note, individuals on Temporary Duty (TDY) are usually not paid per diem if they chose to take any kind of leave in conjunction with the TDY. For that reason any annual, sick or home leave period must be covered by the employee. Exceptions can be made for unscheduled sick leave but it should be requested and accompanied by documentation. Maternity and paternity leave is handled on a special request basis. Please contact [hrpcslodging at state dot gov] with any questions.

If your spouse does not initially travel with you to training, but joins you at some point during the training...
1. Is there some sort of allowance for the spouse during your separation(or something like it)
2. Would you need to initially state that you are staying alone for a period and then move into a larger apartment if your family arrives? (keeping with the Oakwood Apt theme)
