On the JobsUSA website, my application shows a status of "Eligible – Referred to Next Step in Selection Process," and if I click the link to more information it takes me over to the State Department site and shows a status of "Grade 05:Application Referred for Additional Consideration." This was for the IMS posting that closed on August 12th. Can you give me a better idea of what to expect from here on in? Any additional info would be most appreciated, thanks!

Congratulation! You have passed the first step of the application process and your application has been forwarded for further evaluation. In fact, candidates go through a sequence of evaluations before their names can go on the register of elibible candidates. If your candidacy passes the next two steps, you will be invited to the oral assessment, usually in Washington, D.C.

Thank you for the information. As a follow up, can you tell me what those next two steps are, and how long they typically take?

Congrats on getting passed the initial application screening. When I applied I too was curious the timeline from application to hiring. The first thing I have to tell you, which is what was told to me from a friend already in, is to “Be Patient.” The only timeline I can give you was my own:
December 2010 – Application submitted
Jan-19: Status on USAJobs changes to Eligible - Application Referred to Selecting Official
May-18: Invite to Oral Assessment
June-14: Attend Oral Assessment (You find out at the assessment if you pass)
If you pass the Oral Assessment you have to submit Medical Clearance and Security Clearance Paperwork ASAP. Medical Clearance doesn’t take long once you submit your paperwork . Security Clearance depends on your background. I already had a security clearance (adjudicated less than a year ago, my original investigation took 6 months) so this only took a couple weeks to transfer it. Once both are complete your entire application, oral assessment, and clearances will go to a final review panel.
July-20: Received notification that I am on the register (at the time #19 out of 20, I was not told this directly I had to ask, also your placement can fluctuate depending on other new applicants placement on the register)
July-29: Received invite to Foreign Service Specialist Orientation (Sept, 26)
Aug-31: Received Official Offer Letter
Sept-26: I will start FSS Orientation
Hopefully this gives you an idea of the timeline you can expect. Again this was just mine and things are always changing you may experience something completely different. Best of Luck in the following steps.
