Tattoo Policy?

I am curious to know if there is any tattoo policy for Foreign Service Officers, and the Department of State in general.  I'm interested in general policy, but as for myself, I was considering getting tattoos on my forearms.  They would be covered by dress-sleeves, but would be exposed if I were to roll the sleeves up even slightly, as might occur during the course of a normal business day.

Any and all insight is welcomed and much appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

Hello, Patrick,

The Department of State does not have a policy in regard to tatoos.

Thanks so much for the help.  I wasn't expecting an official tattoo policy. However, I wonder if it's perhaps one of those sorts of things where, even though it's not explicitly prohibited, it could be a hindrance in an unofficial way?  In other words, if the wrong person noticed and took issue with it, it might hold you back?  Does that make sense?  Any insight is greatly appreciated.

If you decide to have tattoos, you will want to use common sense as to what the tattoos are.  In some countries tattoos are frowned upon more than in others.  The Department of State has no policy addressing tattoos.

Unofficially, it's certainly possible you would come across some co-workers who would have a reaction to tatoos, but that's just a function of being in a big organization with people of all flavors.  I know other FSOs who have some sort of tatoo, even a few with small earrings.  It's generally not a big deal.
