Re: Qualification
Hi, Michelle,Thanks for your interest in a Foreign Service career.
If you are looking at a Foreign Service Officer career, you will note from our website that there are no specific educational and/or work experience requirements. Some successful candidates have advanced degrees and/or some years of professsional work experience; others do not.
The Foreign Service is interested individuals from all work/educational backgrounds, and we encourage you to consider taking the first step by registering for the Foreign Service Officer Test.
Our Foreign Service Specialist positions do have specific educational and work experience requirements, depending on the specialty. These requirements are outlined in the specialist vacancy announcements.
You may want to speak or correspond with a Diplomat in Residence located close to you for advice. Diplomats in Residence are senior Foreign Service Officers and are key members of our recruitment team. For a listing of Diplomats in Residence, and contact information, please click here:

Diplomats in Residence have regional responsibilities and can offer advice on Department of State Civil Service and Foreign Service careers.
