My question is regarding world wide qualifications for becoming an FSO.

While in the military I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, while I was still returned to duty and not discharged the sleep apnea did not make me world wide qualified, due to the harsh conditions you may be place in deployments and the constant electricity needed to a CPAP machine. I have now separated from the military after completing my term. Will this condition affect my worlwide qualification to become an FSO?

A determination of eligibility for the required Foreign Service medical clearance cannot be made absent the pre-employment medical exam, and the exam cannot commence unless you pass the Oral Assessment process. Each case is reviewed on an individual basis, based on the results of the exam. There is no list of conditions that absolutely preclude consideration.
In order to be hired into the Foreign Service you must be “worldwide available” and not have any medical condition that would preclude worldwide availability. There are some countries where medical/hospital care is very poor. There are places where there are no medical emergency facilities. You should therefore review your medical condition with your own physician first to get his/her opinion on your suitability for worldwide assignment. Should your application for the Foreign Service reach the point where a Department of State pre-employment medical examination is required, your medical condition and pre-employment medical exam results will be carefully reviewed by the Medical Clearance Office which will determine if you are able to serve worldwide. Absent a Department of State pre-employment medical exam, the Medical Clearance Office cannot make a determination. Please also review the information at this link:

You gave a very generic answer which is easily found. The questioner wants to know if certain specific illnesses will automatically render the applicant unfit to receive his World Wide Medical Clearance.

The questioner asked about one who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and requires a CPAP breathing machine.

I would like to inquire the same question if one sjurvived a heart attack, but has no post-event limitations. Let us say this heart attack victim takes some medications daily to lower blood pressure, which is normal and also for the stent.

Can we know before beginning the long process if certain illnesses or conditions are MORE LIKELY to be denied, by there very presence??

We are very well able to read the genereic information. Can we know about specific conditions?

Thank you.

A generic answer is all we can give you. Each medical clearance decision is made based on an individual's medical history.
