Hello,
It would be wonderful if someone could post a "Day in the Life" of a consular adjudicator, similar to the information provided in the book "Inside a U.S. Embassy - Diplomacy at Work". I would love to know what your day is like, and whether CAs are engaged in additional projects at post. I am particularly interested in Brazil, but would appreciate hearing about the experience in general. Thank you.

Ok... I think I made the question too onerous to answer.
Basically, I would like to know the CA workload on a typical day. I imagine, based on the description, that a CA would attend the public in the morning, and investigate cases (requests for non-immigrant visas) in the afternoon. The description also says that CAs may be asked to support other projects at post. I was hoping for a bit more detail, if that is possible.

There are some good videos on the State.gov Careers website that show interviews with all different types of FSOs about highlights of their work, including a couple of videos on the consular track. You should check those out if you want a flavor of what the job is like.

When I was in Shanghai, China I visited the American Citizen Services section and talked with a junior FSO. I asked her what Consular Adjudicators did. She replied, "those guys do everything." She explained that they did a lot of helping out in all the departments but especially in the consular. I don't know how accurate her assessment was, since she had only been at post herself for a little over a month, but her enthusiastic tone definitely gave me the impression that CAs are jacks of all trades.
Anyway, I'd love to hear a "Day in the life" story from a CA myself. I read the four FSO stories in "Inside a U.S. Embassy" twice and found it really helpful to see how they dealt with problems in the consular section. For example, the last FSO story tells us exactly what to do in the case of a deceased American—that might prove very helpful for the hypothetical section of the SI and maybe the written exam. Anyway, best of luck with your candidacy. Hopefully both of us can find out first-hand what a CA actually does.

Here is a good paper that talks about the life of a Consular Adjudicator. It does seem to have some bias, but still very good to look at how the system works.

You may want to look at this one too:

Based on what they write, it looks like us CAs may go to "visa mills", as the author would call our posts.
